If the idea of a sporty full-size sedan that returns midsize fuel economy sounds appealing, we think you’ll like the new Pontiac G8 sedan.
Borrowed from GM’s Australian Holden brand, Pontiac’s new full-size sedan is offered in three flavors, including the entry-level G8, the sporty GT, and the performance-oriented GXP. Available powertrains range from the base model’s 256-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 and five-speed automatic transmission to the GXP’s 6.2-liter V-8 that sends an estimated 402 horsepower to the rear wheels via your choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is decent enough on V-6-powered models but we shudder to think what kind of mileage the GXP’s monster motor gets.
We tested a G8 GT with the 361-horsepower, 6.0-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic under the hood and were impressed by its substantial power. The suspension also felt surprisingly taut for a car this size, delivering above-average handling with a firm but very livable ride quality.
In addition to all this performance potential, the interior of Pontiac’s new flagship model offers reasonable room for five passengers along with plenty of cargo room in the humongous trunk. The G8’s passenger cabin can also be fitted out with niceties like leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a 230-watt Blaupunkt audio system, but some popular options, including a GPS navigation system, aren’t available.
With something to please both the fuel economy-conscious and horsepower junkies, the full-size G8 sedan gives a broad range of car shoppers a new reason to visit their local Pontiac showroom.
